Fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. (2 Timothy 1.6-9, NIV)
The above passage from 2nd Timothy is one of my personal favorites, because it was so meaningful to me at a time when I was making significant decisions about my life. St. Paul's instruction to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you asserts two important truths. First, it tells us that each of us have godly gifts and those gifts are part of who we are from the very beginning of our lives. Secondly, Paul declares that we must not squander our gifts by ignoring them; rather, we nurture them by boldly using them to serve God and others. The image of a fire reminds us that if coals are left unattended, the fire will flicker away, the coals will turn cold, and the fire goes out. But if a fire is fanned and stoked, then it continues to burn brightly and to bring warmth and energy to those who are close by.
As we continue to rebuild and regroup from the devastation of Ike, it is very important that we take this message to heart. Many of our brothers and sisters are still down and struggling to find a way to go forward; others are anxious and overly worried that Galveston will be hit again; and others just doubt that God really loves and cares about their lives. Our witness of a loving God that offers comfort and peace of mind to all is vitally important in today's circumstances. And at Grace, we now have fewer folks to help with our ministries, so there are many opportunities for new people to use their gifts by stepping up to help . Please pray about your gifts and let me know how you would like to serve God in Grace Church.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Paul+
